With a small c.

The guy who was in Jaws has died. This reminds me that I never saw Jaws. Or ET. I saw Star Wars for the first time as an adult. These are the gaps in my cultural heritage caused by growing up without a VCR and miles away from a cinema so that cinema trips were usually communal which meant the strict irish family who lived about half a mile up the road ensured we rarely got to see anything more toxic than Santaclaus The Movie. Repeatedly. (To this day, I wonder is there really anything more toxic than that pile of bilge?).

So, as an 'adult' in college, I met this strange breed of people who were, to put it bluntly, pretentious wankers. No mainstream poison for them. Popular means To be Avoided. TV rots your brain. All information is biased, so I must only read stuff that is already biased to my views, though I will steadfastly refuse to admit that is what I am doing - that was the typical outlook. A complete rejection of culture with a small c. And all I can think, a little pityingly, is that a bit of candyfloss every so often is no bad thing.

This weekend, I wallowed in small c culture. I wore tracksuit bottoms while not at the gym. I ate bowls of slow cooked chilli, ice cream straight from the tub and watched Midsomer Murders and multiple episodes of Life on Mars (a double dose of popular references there).

Today, I flew through my work in record time.
